Are You Preparing?

Success depends on previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure.
— Confucius

There is a promotion opportunity coming up for Steve at work. When I asked him if he was going to start studying for it, he looked me straight in the eyes and assuredly stated, "I am always studying."

Made me think....what if we were all like Steve? What if we were always preparing, always studying? Oh, how our lives would be different! No more desperate diets to fit into our bathing suits by the summer, no more cramming all night before finals, no more rushing to finish our to-do lists. We would turn our resolutions into lifestyles!

What are your future goals, desires, dreams? Lose weight? Earn a promotion? Win an upcoming event? Our future success depends on our past preparations. Noah's story would be a lot different if he waited for the rain to begin building the ark...

Are you preparing?

A short box is a highly effective workout tool that is also inexpensive! Win-Win! Watch our latest training video for a great sport-specific warm-up, perfect for athletes of all sorts. This warm-up can also be made into a quick, fat-burning, calorie-blasting workout when repeated. Enjoy!

Fit for the Holidays- Part 4

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Or so they say....

In actuality, this is the time of year where we rush to buy last minute presents, wake up in the middle of the night wondering if we moved that stupid elf, develop writer's cramp sending out Christmas cards, spend endless hours in the kitchen, and frantically run around from school plays to doorbuster deals to office parties to family gatherings. It is exhausting!

When it comes to putting on weight, the only thing worse than a binge of eggnog and pecan pie is stress! You have worked so hard up to this point. Squeezed in morning workouts, used portion control, increased your water intake, and passed on the office sweets. Do not let the whirlwind pace of the holidays ruin all your efforts.

Part 4- Relax and enjoy the season

  • De-stress- Take a moment to meditate, do yoga, or sneak in a power nap to renew and energize yourself.
  • Think positive- When a negative thought creeps in, replace it with something wonderful!
  • Turn on the tube- White Christmas, Elf, It's a Wonderful Life, there is nothing like a classic holiday film to bring a smile to your face ☺
  • Politely decline- It is okay to say no. Remember that.
  • Pamper yourself- Get a pedicure, take a long, hot bath, read a book by the fire and just enjoy a little time for you.
  • Find your inner child- Think back to Christmas as a child- no school, building a snowman, decorating cookies, singing carols, and opening presents. Christmas wasn't work, it was a joyous time full of memories and cheer. Keep it that way.

Remember, it is okay if you do not check everything off the list, it is okay to pass off store bought cookies as your own, and it is okay if the Christmas photos with Santa turn out to be more looks of fear than of joy. Decline (yet another) party invitation and just relax this weekend. With a little more joy and a little less stress, Christmas can once again be the most wonderful time of the year!

Tight, sore muscles are not always the results of strenuous workouts. Sometimes, stress can cause havoc to our bodies. Our recovery workouts are great for relieving tension and pain.

Last Minute

Sorry, I have been so behind on posting. I have a confession to make- I am a procrastinator. A habitual, wait to the last second, oh my word, I'll never get it done in time, procrastinator. Yep, that is me. In fact, right now, I am up to my old tricks again. I have less than two weeks to finish about a month's worth of schoolwork.

Did I tell you I was back in school? My competitive side keeps me from ever settling. When one goal is complete, I immediately begin my next adventure. So, fast forward to the present, and here I am, frantically trying to hold two jobs while being a full-time student. What was I thinking?

Anything and everything fitness-related fascinates me. The human body is an amazing thing! The way our bodies adapt to training, how they react to various foods, what they are able to accomplish, we are capable of such incredible things. I want nothing more than to inspire and help others to reach any goal that they may dream. I want my athletes to reap the greatest benefits from sport, I want to give fitness and nutritional advice that is factual and backed by science, and I want to pass on my knowledge and experience to any and all who are willing to listen. Maybe my goals are a little far-fetched, but I am sure going to try my best to be the best!

Well, I have put off my homework long enough. I need to stay focused on the task at hand and concentrate on acing these exams. For the next week or so, I am going to be too busy to post new workout videos and fitness blogs....please don't think I am abandoning you! So, instead, I leave you with a CHALLENGE! Water Weight

Probably going to offend a few people with this post, but please understand that I only wish to educate and not to displease. Today, I am going to discuss body wraps, and all things sauna-related. Sadly, I consider myself an "expert" when it comes to products that rid the body of water weight. With over 20 years of trying to "make weight," I know what works, what doesn't, and what is the fastest. I have stories, lots of stories- losing 20 pounds in two weeks, losing 10 pounds overnight, and these are nothing compared to my husband's weight loss "achievements." But trust me, I am not bragging, nor am I proud, because it was dangerous and never permanent. In fact, even quicker than I lost it, I put it back on.

So, what convinces people in search of a weight loss solution to buy such products? Is it the before and after pictures? You should ask for an after-after picture, a once they drank some water or ate some food picture! Is it the promise to target just fat or to spot-reduce your trouble areas? Well, that is just physiologically impossible...in fact, here is some actual evidence.

When asked about body wraps and their claims to detoxify the body or shrink inches, the former president of American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery, Dr. Joel Schlessinger, stated they were "chicanery and hucksterism." He continued to point out that any difference that did occur was all due to water loss and would be gained back once the client has a few glasses of water.

Other claims are the benefits of vitamins, minerals, and herbs being added to the body and used to help flush out cellulite and toxins. As you all read in my blog about detox diets, your body just does not work like that. Let your liver and kidneys do their job.

According to Dr. Mariotti, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, "Diet and exercise is the only thing that works, but, everyone is looking for a shortcut." There is no scientific evidence that wraps help shrink inches, rid the body of cellulite, or help with sags and bags of the skin. Even doctors involved with natural-healing are skeptical. Dr. Andrew Hall, a natural-healing guru, writes that body wraps will not melt away anything but your wallet. Ouch.

As far as sauna suits, sauna belts, and sauna sessions, be careful...a nice relaxing moment in the sauna after a long day is one thing, but anything beyond that is dangerous and ineffective. Saunas (and sauna-related clothing) cause dehydration, changes in blood volume, and significant changes in oxygen supply. It also causes oxidative stress, you know, that thing we eat a lot of antioxidant food trying to prevent!

There is no correlation between fat loss and sweating. When famous celebrity trainers were interviewed about the benefits of body wraps and sauna belts, they were quoted as saying:

If sweating had anything to do with fat loss, "everyone would look like a model come summer." - Clancy

Sweating does assist your body in flushing toxins, but you do not need to buy expensive wraps or belts, "everyone has a pair of sweat pants and a sweatshirt." - Conrad

Spot reduction is a physiological impossibility. Thank your grandma's thighs or your dad's belly to where you gain and lose fat. It is all up to genetics. Society would call my body type a "pear." My thighs and tooshie are the first to get all my bad decisions, and are the last to go when I try to lose a few pounds. No amount of squats or lunges are going to change that. A nutritious diet along with exercise is the best way to lose extra pounds and inches. Stop spending your money on shortcuts. Steve and I are here to help you make long-term changes that will lead to a healthy lifestyle and lasting results!

Oh, the benefits of a massage! Relieving tight, sore muscles is essential for proper recovery during your training. For those of us who can not afford daily massages, a cheap, yet effective, alternative is to perform a self-massage using a lacrosse ball. Watch Maddie demonstrate a few examples of lacrosse ball massage in our video "Massage Recovery."

Take a Rest

Take a rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop.

Sometimes your eyes get heavy, or maybe your muscles hurt, or you may even get sick. Listen to your body! Pushing through a workout will move you closer to your goals, but pushing yourself through physical exhaustion or pain is only going to set you back.
