The holidays are a season for giving. We give thanks, we give presents, we give joy! Unfortunately, we also receive. No, I am not talking gifts, I am talking weight gain. Sadly, putting on "Holiday Weight" is as common as the "Freshman 15."
The good news is the average person only gains a pound or two. The bad news is most do not lose the weight after the holidays leading to a yearly climb towards obesity. So, in an effort to help you fight off those pesky pounds, we offer some great tips to help you stay "Fit for the Holidays!"
Part 1- Make a plan and stick to it!
- Rise and Shine- As if your life is not busy enough, throw in some holiday chaos. Between planning, shopping, tree-trimming, attending parties, and wrapping gifts, the days from Halloween to New Year's become a blur. With all the hustle and bustle, your best bet is to squeeze in a workout first thing in the morning. Trust me, I am not a fan of sunrise sweat sessions, I prefer to ease into my day. But if you wait until later, chances are you will find an excuse to miss out. Try one of our Short and Sweet workouts here. All are under 20 minutes so you can still get in your morning coffee stop!
- Pick Your Poison- It seems everywhere you turn there are holiday treats calling your name. The supermarket is giving free samples at every corner, the mall is filled with an aroma of pumpkin spice lattes and peppermint candy canes, and just when you finally found the willpower to pass on the office donuts, someone brings in Christmas cookies. The temptations never end! Do you really want those sugar cookies in the break room or would you rather have some hot cocoa tonight as you snuggle by the fireplace? Go ahead and indulge a little, but choose your treats wisely.
- Catch Some ZZZs- One of the best things you can do for your body is rest. Sneak in a quick nap, relax during your lunch break, and aim for at least 8 hours of sleep at night. You should skimp on the portion size of Granny's famous pumpkin pie, but never skimp on your sleep! Your body will thank you and you will have more energy to face those Black Friday crowds.
- Get a Buddy- The holidays are best enjoyed with a loved one! We make gingerbread houses with our kids, go shopping with our girlfriends, and sing carols with our family. So why not share your passion for health and fitness too? A training partner keeps you motivated, helps you stay on track, and adds a dimension of fun to your workouts! Check out our Partner Up workouts here.
Make a plan and stick to it! We are here to help you meet your goals this holiday season. Stay tuned for Part 2, where we will cover everything you need to survive the Turkey Day meal. In Part 3 we will handle the office Christmas party and your New Year's celebration. You can do this! You GET what you GIVE!
